PEOPLE PROBLEMS
"If lake residents are committed to preserving the primitive,
pristine aspects of their lakes by protecting optimal nesting habitats
for loons, then a comeback in loon populations can occur, and their
presence will, in turn, enhance the lake's wild qualities." -Scott
Sutcliffe, 1980
Most loon problems are really people problems. Some, like
chemical contamination, or excessive gull and raccoon populations,
are camouflaged and removed by a layer or two from the core of
loon problemsmhuman ignorance and apathy. Other loon problems
are all too visible: a loon with gunshot wounds, a loon with a hook
deeply embedded in its gullet because a "sportsman" left a minnow
unattended for hours, a loon entangled and immobilized by a plastic
six-pack holder, a loon found dead from internal bleeding, the result
of a let's-run-down-the-loon joyride. While all of these problems are
real, they are fortunately rare. Aggressive public education efforts in
most states have eliminated or at least reduced these excesses, but
the quiet problems remain, like the nature photographer who must
get a nesting loon shot and needs twelve attempts before getting the
focus perfect.
